WHAT THE 2016 MS. USA WIN REALLY MEANS

I was super ecstatic to have the honor and privilege to witness the crowning of Deshauna Barber for Ms. USA 2016. It definitely reiterates and reinforces my point of view about black women, there power, beauty, dedication and knowledge. ( Fist bump).. What I am hoping this shows to our younger generation is that just as we elected, inaugurated and put our First African American president Barack Obama into office in 2009. All things are possible. It was not so very long ago that we as a people had to sneak to read and write. Now with opportunities so readily available to us. We should never cease our efforts towards becoming more knowledgeable and educated. 

Ms. Barber has had her way paved for her by 5 other stunning and educated ladies of color.

Ms USA 1990- Carole Gist, Ms USA 1993-Kenya Moore, Ms USA 1995 Chelsi Smith, Ms USA 2000 Lynette Cole, Ms USA 2002 Shauntay Hinton, Ms USA 2007 Rachel Smith and Ms.  USA 2008 Crystle Stewart. These sisters all embarked on a journey that led them to platforms that hopefully one day will uplift, inspire and give a voice to little brown girls all over the world. What this win should mean is that. While your body may be desired by many. You have so much more to offer. And the sky is the limit.

Job Well Done

This weekend, I found it extremely hard getting out of my pj's. Mostly because I was on recoop mode from the Memorial Day Weekend festivities and slightly because early Saturday morning I found myself entranced by A&E and the History Channels Miniseries of the all time classic Roots. While there were definitely some new faces to the big screen. Roots kept its same poignant and historically based story line about the infamous Kunta Kinte. It was definitely a step up from Lavar Burtons 1970's movie. It was fresher, believable and had plenty of excitement. It was a 4 part action packed series with each one lasting roughly 2 and a half hours. Same story line. The episodes took you from the life of Kunta Kinte to the Life of his daughter Belle and her Son Chicken George. This series aired initially over the Memorial Day Weekend. Starting on Sunday. I didn't find the time to watch then but promised myself that I would. And so I bummed out, blanket, potato chips and Roots. I can honestly say it was well worth the time spent. I really enjoyed it. Kunta Was played by new actor Malachi Kirby. Not so new actors, Derek Luke (with his fine self), Lawrence Fishburne narrated, Tip, Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, and Mekhi Phipher. I'm sure there were more that I just can't remember right now but check it out for yourself and get empowered.. It was definitely a a reminding factor that our people have endured a lot and  have come a mighty long way.
